First Stop: Blossom Vineyards
Frank Olagaray took over his parents' 55 acres of land in Thornton, CA, in 1996 and in the decades since has grown it to more than 1,400 acres. Much of the clay loam soils he acquired over the years were deficient in calcium, potassium and phosphorus – having had minerals taken out for years but never replaced.
Soil expert Glen Rabenberg, of Soil Works LLC, worked with Olagaray to correct the cause of his soil issues, rather than reacting to the symptoms. Through this, Olagaray was able to start rebuilding his soil and is now getting stronger yields. Today the farm grows 940 acres of wine grapes, 280 acres of olives for olive oil, 135 acres of organic walnuts and and 128 acres of organic almonds.
Join soil consultant Glen Rabenberg and owner Frank Olagaray for an insightful walk through this gem of a farm – learning about the soil strategies that brought this soil back to life and how to identify problems in the field in order to address them successfully.
Second Stop: Marrone Bio Innovations
Marrone Bio Innovations was founded by Pamela Marrone in 2006, with the goal of developing effective and environmentally responsible, biologically based products for pest management and plant health.
This 75-minute tour will take you through the unique processes that the company uses to develop its biological pest management tools. The tour will include a walk-through of their three research buildings and greenhouse. You'll see how the team at Marrone Bio Innovations tests microbes, the fermentation, product formulation and quality control processes and how they put their products to the test in lab and greenhouse environments.
Don't miss this unique opportunity to go behind the scenes to see the production of some powerful new tools for biological farmers.
