Water for Any Farm
Written as a companion to the bestseller, Restoration Agriculture, this book will help farmers capture water in areas they want to, and avoid having water flow immediately to the low point. The result? Less water expense, healthier crops and livestock, and less erosion ... just to name a few.
What you will read in this book is a distillation of over 25 years of on-the-ground experience working with and modifying the Yeomans’ Keyline Plan. From the back yard suburbs to 10,000-acre ranches and everywhere in between, from permafrost mountainsides just shy of the Arctic Circle, to equatorial boulder fields of East Africa, areas with 300 inches of rain per year to those with less than 3 inches, I have personally installed systems based on the Keyline design methodology and its modified forms.
What you will read in this book is tried and true. It is intended to give a sufficient background to any landowner so that they can optimize their water resource for higher site productivity, have greater drought resistance and just as importantly, to know deep in their heart that they have made even one little piece of earth a little more life-filled, livable and green.

Mark's first book Restoration agriculture is a real winner. This book is not quite as good but it is still worth a read. He has refined Yeoman's key line principle to make it work better in the not uncommon anomalies in the landscape. Unfortunately too much emphasis is placed on demoting other systems than his own. There are some great photos of some examples of his work, but I found the theoretical diagrams to be harder to follow. Despite this it's full of ideas and inspiration.
Great companion to Restoration Agriculture
Mark Shepard’s new book Water for Any Farm takes you onto the ground and into the field designing your own land for maximum water absorption. The many pictures make it easy to understand and replicate on any landscape.
I've had the opportunity to meet and learn from Mark. He is a force when it comes to permaculture. It's similar to how water is a force of nature. Great book!
I haven't put the methods described here into action yet, but it is by far the best book on keylines. He processes all the good and bad from Yeoman's book, shares his many years of experience, provides many different examples as teaching tools, and explains how to learn to adapt to your own land's uniqueness. It wasn't easy for me to get at first I'll admit....two times through it made more sense.
