By Allan Nation, 2nd edition revised by Jim Gerrish

This book offers down-to-earth, low-cost tactics to create high-energy pasture that will reduce or eliminate expensive inputs or purchased feeds.

While some basic principles remain the same since the 1st Edition, significant changes have come about in the pasture-based livestock industry. Ideas presented in 1995 were cutting edge in grazing science and practice. Some of those ideas have grown and flourished as author Allan Nation predicted, while others have gone by the wayside.

As an early follower of Allan's work, Jim Gerrish has witnessed this evolution. Drawing on his background as a researcher, grass farmer, and consultant, Jim has revised Quality Pasture to reflect current knowledge and thinking within the pasture-based community. In this 2nd Edition, a few of Allan's original chapters remain almost intact. Several chapters were edited and updated, and about half of the chapters are newly written to reflect current knowledge and thinking.

Chapters cover:

  • How to create quality pasture from the soil up.
  • How to do a forage test and understand what it's good for.
  • How to choose the right livestock class for your climate.
  • How to introduce multiple-species grazing.
  • How to manage for year-round quality pasture.

This updated 2nd Edition provides a comprehensive guide to creation and utilization of intensively managed quality pastures for profitable and regenerative grass farming.
